Extended Day Instrumental Music Program

Elementary Instrumental Music instruction transitioned into the Elementary Extended Day for Learning Program (EDL) in 2010. Since then, the EDL Instrumental Music Program has served approximately 1,300 students, whose demographic make-up mirrors that of the District, each year. The program offers access to beginning-level instrumental music for elementary students in grades 4 and 5 in most K-5 schools and grades 4-8 in several K-8 schools.
The EDL Instrumental Music Program is a dually funded program with the Department of Alternative Education (DAE) and the Office of Teaching and Learning (OTL) and is embedded within the Extended Day for Learning Program, which provides after-school classes for elementary students in the areas of reading, math, applied academics and instrumental music instruction. Students in grades 4 and 5 have the option to participate in an instrumental music program as an applied academic option with curricular connections in Math and Reading emphasized through music instruction. Most EDL programs begin in October and run into May. Instruction is primarily based on weekly small group pull-out sessions with possible full ensemble instruction and performances by the end of the Extended Day year. All instruments, repairs, method books and supplies are provided for students.Interested students can register for EDL Instrumental Music through their school site leader. Registration is available in 5 languages and may be downloaded in English, Spanish, Hmong, Somali, and Karen.

Applications are being accepted for part-time hourly positions for the current school year. EDL teachers work after school 3 hours per day, two-four days per week. Interested teachers may view the complete job description and apply through Human Resources.
