Resources by Racial and Cultural Groups

  • These resources have been compiled to support learning in the SPPS community by providing both windows and mirrors - windows into races, cultures and identities that may be less familiar to you, and mirrors into those that represent your own lived experience. We believe that race, culture and identity are intersectional and complex, and that they do not neatly fit into any resource list–even the language used to describe each group is worthy of deep conversation and examination from multiple perspectives. We also believe that SPPS students, teachers and community members want to learn more about themselves and others.

These lists are meant to provide starting points for that learning to happen. While some of these resources address topics identified by MDE as areas of cultural competency, you can find SPPS courses that fulfill these requirements here. We encourage you to use the Courageous Conversations About Race (CCAR) Protocolas one tool to process the information you find here. If you are unfamiliar with the Protocol or would like a refresher course on using it, the Office of Equity offers EQUITY/MLR(P1): Getting to Know the Protocol 101, as an asynchronous schoology course.  Many of the resources listed include links to further resources, and we have not fully vetted each and every one of those. If you have any questions, concerns, comments or suggestions for improving these lists we invite you to contact us at cec@spps.org. These are meant to be living documents, and we welcome your input.
