Before and After School Child Care and Activities

  • Saint Paul Public Schools offers several education opportunities, care, and programming for students before and after each school day. Some of these opportunities are fee-based, others are need-based and others are available only at certain locations.

    After-school Activities and Clubs

    From Lego Leagues to science clubs to cheerleading to chess, each school offers a variety of after-school activities for students. Please view each school's website to learn more.

    Community Education

    Saint Paul Public Schools Community Education provides fee-based after-school learning opportunities for elementary-age youth at various schools across Saint Paul. Free programming is also available at some schools through a partnership with Extended Day for Learning (EDL). Programs are safe, supportive, engaging and reflective, and include a wide variety of subjects such as: foreign languages, dance, LEGO engineering, theater, art and more.     Discovery Club

    Discovery Club is a fee-based child care program that supports learning and development before and/or after school, on non-school days and during summer. The program is available to currently enrolled PreK-5 students either at their school or at a Discovery Club Hub school.     Extended Day for Learning (EDL)

    The Extended Day for Learning (EDL) after-school program provides students with a combination of academic support and learning activities for one hour and 45 minutes, two to four days per week. The free program includes snacks and/or a meal. Bus transportation is provided at some sites to eligible students, per availability. For more information, visit spps.org/alted or call 651-744-8020.

    Flipside

    Flipside is a free after-school program that provides middle school students with academic support and enrichment activities. The program is held Monday-Thursday at 15 schools across the district: American Indian Magnet, Battle Creek Middle, Capitol Hill Magnet, Creative Arts Secondary, E-STEM Middle, Farnsworth Aerospace 5-8, Global Arts Plus-Upper, Hazel Park Preparatory Academy, Hidden River Middle School, Highland Park Middle, Hmong Language and Culture Middle School at Parkway, Humboldt High School, Open World Learning, Murray Middle and Washington Technology. A snack/dinner is provided. School bus transportation is available to students two evenings a week; days differ depending on location and are subject to transportation guidelines.     Freedom School Express

    Freedom School Express After-School Leadership Program features culturally responsive lessons, books and enriching group projects that empower scholars to believe they will achieve, gain skills to make it real, and anticipate they will graduate to something great! This free after-school program is held at Benjamin E. Mays IB World School, Capitol Hill Gifted and Talented, and Hazel Park Preparatory Academy two days per week. A snack/dinner is provided and school bus transportation is available to students after the program ends each evening (within transportation guidelines).     Interscholastic Athletics

    Interscholastic athletic opportunities are available for students in grades 6-12 and vary by school. Every student will learn about leadership, teamwork, commitment to goal achievement, building character, competition and school pride. Students must be academically and medically cleared to be eligible to participate.     Adapted Athletics

    Students in grades 7-12 with physical or cognitive disabilities are encouraged to compete in adapted athletics. Through experience in sports, athletes gain confidence for success in the classroom, at home, on the job and in the community.

    • Winter: Adapted Floor Hockey
    • Spring: Adapted Bowling or Softball
