Grade Levels: K-5th
In the summer of 2020, the Office of Equity and Social Studies Department worked with teachers to create 30 three-day units that integrate social studies and literacy. All units:
- are written specifically for K-5 distance learning.
- Including activities on SeeSaw, Schoology and Google docs
- are built around a children’s book with diverse representation - all books are available as multi-user e-books
- integrate standards from social studies, literacy and other content areas
- Identify culturally responsive instructional strategies and Teaching Tolerance social justice standards
- Including Courageous Conversations Classrooms, tools teachers can use to develop themselves and their classrooms to engage in meaningful conversations with students.

On-line Read-Alouds and Resources: Diverse Representation in Children's Literature

Grade Levels: PreK-5th
These books are linked to on-line read alouds and represent various races, cultures and topics. Many have educator resources that can be adapted for different grade levels. Some are directly aligned with elementary social studies standards.

Data Base: Children’s Books with Diverse Representation Aligned with Social Studies Standards, Grades 2-5

Grade Levels: 2nd-5th
In 2017, the CEC partnered with SPPS teachers, and members of the Social Studies and Elementary Literacy Departments to develop this data base of high quality children's literature with diverse representation. All books align with social studies standards in grades 2-5, and can be checked out from the CEC by filling out resource request form. The books have been vetted by SPPS teachers, but there are always multiple perspectives that may not have been considered. There are always new books being published as well!
