2022-23 Program Descriptions

  • K-4 Summer Stars

    Students discover new talents, skills and interests through active, fun and hands-on activities based on high-interest topics. The program includes classes in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math), Reading, Economics, Physical Education, Music, and Art. Wilderness Inquiry, Saint Paul Public Library, and MN Academy of Science are community partners working alongside teachers to enhance learning and create a memorable summer experience.  


    Grades K-4 Language Immersion & Culture

    SPPS students enrolled in a language immersion program during the 2022-23 school year extend their language skills through French, Spanish, Hmong, or Mandarin Chinese classes. Participants not enrolled in an Immersion Program during the 2022-23 school year learn about American Indian languages and culture, including indigenous animals, habitats, art, and music. All students get a head start for the upcoming school year by maintaining academic skills and physical fitness under the guidance of teachers in collaboration with community partners.


    Grades K-8 CDF Freedom Schools

    Freedom Schools strengthens literacy skills through a researched-based Integrated Reading Curriculum that features books, materials and projects that represent the heritages and experiences of our scholars. Essential features include Hero Elementary K-2; Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math instruction; Parent and Family Empowerment Events; Community Engagement; Pathways to Careers; Health and Wellness; Social Action; and Field Trips. Scholars see themselves in our high quality Servant Leader Educators and community leader mentors/role models. This program is developed in collaboration with the Saint Paul Promise Neighborhood.


    Grades 3-8 Environmental STEM (Environmental Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)

    Students experience hands-on activities and field trips with a focus on Environmental Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). Classes include Engineering, Coding, Construction, Sports, Environmental Studies, and Cooking. This program is sponsored by 3M and includes multiple STEM-themed field trips. 


    Grades K-4 Power Scholars Academy

    The Power Scholars Academy summer program combines academic instruction with fun, hands-on enrichment activities, field trips and community service projects. The program is designed to help students gain new academic skills so they can excel during the next school year. This program is developed in collaboration with the YMCA and Saint Paul Promise Neighborhood, with teachers working with students in the morning and YMCA staff working with students in the afternoon.


    Pre-K Summer Program

    This program is for students enrolled in SPPS's Pre-K Program during the 2022-23 school year. Students prepare for entering kindergarten in Fall 2023.
