In-Service Credits and Lane Change Guidelines

  • In accordance with the agreement between the Saint Paul Board of Education and the Saint Paul Federation of Educators, in-service credit may be granted for professional development coursework completed. In-service credits earned may result in movement on the wage scale for educators and educational assistants. For more information regarding In-Service Credit and lane change for teachers/educational assistants click here. SPPS-sponsored courses/trainings must be directly related to an educator’s or EA's employment responsibilities.

    For Educators:

    • Department sponsors and presenters seek pre-approval to offer a course/training for In-Service Credit. Not all courses/trainings offer In-Service Credit. The course description will state if the course/training is offered for In-Service Credit. The minimum number of professional learning hours required for courses/trainings to offer In-Service Credit is 10 hours and the course/training must also include a final project/product or demonstration of learning.
    • The number of In-Service Credits earned is determined by the course/training professional learning time and projects.
    • Ten hours of professional learning time is equal to 1 in-service credit (10:1).
    • Educators must complete all professional learning hours and requirements to receive In-Service Credit(s); In-Service Credits are not awarded for partial completion.
    • Coursework for In-Service Credit must be taken on the employee’s own time, in lieu of a stipend from the District (#625); In-Service Credit cannot be awarded when courses/trainings are completed during the contracted workday.

    For EAs:

    • All courses/trainings are eligible for In-Service Credit when completed outside of the contracted workday.
    • Coursework for In-Service Credit must be taken on the employee’s own time, in lieu of a stipend from the District (#625).
    • The number of In-Service Credits earned is determined by the course/training professional learning time.
    • Ten hours of professional learning time is equal to 1 in-service credit (10:1).
    • In-Service Credits are awarded based on the hours of professional learning completed.

In-Service Credits will appear on the SPPS PowerSchool transcript in the in-service credit column.
