28th Annual Saint Paul Honors Concert is April 23 at the Ordway

  • More than 450 Saint Paul Public School (SPPS) student artists, vocalists and instrumentalists will showcase their skills and talents during the 28th annual Honors Concert on Tuesday, April 23 at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts.

    This annual event, presented by Saint Paul Public Schools (SPPS), in partnership with Ordway Center for the Performing Arts and Minnesota Museum of American Art (The M), includes an instrumental and vocal concert, performance art and a projected video of original Honors student artwork.

    The evening will be emceed by Central High School graduate Stokley Williams. Williams, a Grammy-nominated vocalist, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist, is best known as the lead singer and drummer for legendary R&B group Mint Condition. He has crisscrossed the globe, touring with luminaries like Prince, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson and Alicia Keys.

    Williams is known for his enduring collaborations, including his is 2011 effort with Kelly Price, "Not My Daddy,” which earned a GRAMMY nomination; his television performances alongside Jimmy Fallon and Conan O’Brien; work on awards shows such as BET Honors and the American Music Awards; and his film scores and catalogue of studio work, with  Mariah Carey, Usher, Mary J. Blige and Jill Scott.

    The Honors Concert includes a free student showcase prior to the show, with Honors Visual Artwork projected during the concert. Honors student artwork will be shown May 16-May 26 at Minnesota Museum of American Art (The M) in Saint Paul.

    The Honors Visual Arts Exhibition hours are 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. on Thursdays. The exhibition is free and open to the public, and will feature selected paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures and other works submitted by SPPS students.

    Since 1992, the annual Honors Concert has featured the musical and artistic talents of nearly 9,000 Saint Paul students through vocal and instrumental performances, spoken word poetry and visual art exhibitions. Students are selected to participate through auditions and art submissions.
