Dr. Gothard Named Finalist for Madison Metropolitan School District Superintendent

Saint Paul Public Schools Superintendent Joe Gothard has been selected as a finalist for the next superintendent of the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) in Madison, Wisconsin. Dr. Gothard is one of three finalists for the job, narrowed down from nearly 60 applicants from around the country. MMSD plans to announce their new superintendent by early March.

Dr. Gothard has been an incredible leader for Saint Paul Public Schools since July 2017. He is the 2024 Minnesota Superintendent of the Year and a finalist for National Superintendent of the Year. Born and raised in Madison, he attended MMSD schools, and spent most of his career in that district before coming to Minnesota in 2013 to be superintendent of ISD 191.

If he is selected for and accepts this opportunity to return to Madison, the Board of Education will work closely with SPPS leadership to determine a timeline and transition plan.
