SPPS Sees Gains on MCA Test Scores in Reading and Science; Math Scores Unchanged

St. Paul, MINN. – District-wide MCA test results for the 2015-16 school year show that Saint Paul Public Schools (SPPS) students made increases in reading and science scores as compared to the previous school year. The results for math revealed no change.

Compared to 2015, SPPS saw an increase of two percentage points in reading proficiency (39 percent) and three percentage points in science proficiency (32 percent). In math, the overall proficiency rate remained at 37 percent.

“We are encouraged by the gains in reading in our upper grades and the overall increases in reading and science scores across the district,” said Michelle Walker, Chief Executive Officer for the district. “However, I remain concerned about the incremental progress for our district and the number of students who are still not proficient.”

CEO Walker added that like every other urban school district in this nation, SPPS continues to search for the perfect mix of programming, professional development, and community support that will propel its students’ to academic achievement.
