Ms. Miao

Hello! Welcome to my web page. I am Miao Laoshi. This is my seventeenth year of teaching Chinese at Highland Park Senior High School. I was born and raised in Taiwan and came to the U.S. in the late 1980s. I began teaching Chinese at a Saturday school in 1990 and obtained a Master of Education degree in Second Language and Cultural Education from the University of Minnesota in 1992.

This year I teach Chinese for all levels, and Chinese Immersion12. I also offer four College in the Schools courses from the University of Minnesota to higher-level Chinese students, CHN1011CHN1015CHN 3016, and CHN3022.

I'm also the advisor of Youth Alive Club.  Youth Alive is a student-led Christian student group that meets every Friday at 7:45 AM in Room 1217.  This is a predominantly Christian group, but we welcome anyone interested in learning about our faith to join. The group's purpose is to strengthen faith in God's truth and Word, share life burdens, and encourage and support one another. Our meetings include singing worship songs, prayer, sharing, and fellowship. Click link to learn more about the club.

I look forward to another great school year!

  • 2023-2024 Chinese Film Festival

On Thursday, October 26, 2023, Chinese College-in-the-School students participated in the Chinese Film Festival at the University of Minnesota. The event, sponsored by The Chinese Flagship Program, the China Center, and the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Minnesota, provided students with the opportunity to select a Chinese idiom and craft a story around it. Our students dedicated significant effort to producing their films, and their presence was notable at the award celebration held. In a competitive environment with over 150 students from various high schools across Minnesota, our school emerged victorious, securing six awards, including recognition for the Best Use of Chinese Idiom, Best Animation, and the prestigious Best Film Award!
