  • Fourth grade is a thrilling time in the lives of children, especially at Global Arts Plus!

Our fourth graders produce an original opera during the school year! We also have teachers from the Midwest Food Connection come into our classrooms and teach our students about nutrition and healthy eating habits while they cook delicious food for us to taste!

    Literacy

At Global Arts Plus, we utilize Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop. In reading, students focus on strengthening comprehension strategies through shared lessons, guided reading, book clubs, paired reading, and independent reading. Some of the many strategies that students concentrate on are identifying main idea and supporting details, sequencing events and ideas, summarizing information, analyzing elements of literature, genre studies, strengthening self-monitoring and self-correcting strategies, and improving fluency.

Our main goal is for students to read a wide variety of books, and to truly enjoy reading and all that it has to offer.  Students are often engaged in project work and enjoy the flexibility that they have to create something that relates to their learning.

In Writer’s Workshop, students write an assortment of “polished” pieces through a variety of writing styles.  Students learn how to write realistic fiction, a research paper, poetry, and many other styles of functional writing.  We keep a writer’s notebook and are encouraged to write whenever ideas come to mind.

    Math

Fourth graders continue to learn math through an St. Paul Public School's-created mathematics curriculum. It is an exciting time in the life of a fourth graders because this year they learn how to multiply multi-digit numbers, long division, strengthen their knowledge of fractions, and build on that knowledge to understand decimals and percents.  We strive to meet the needs of all of our students, and often have students work on projects that relate to what they learn.

    Other Information

Below is more information that we believe makes Fourth Grade truly special at Global Arts Plus.

Our students write, produce, audition, and create an original opera every year. Students look forward to this project beginning in Kindergarten, and cannot wait to begin the school year.

In Social Studies students learn Minnesota History as well as map skills and Geography.

Every Friday our school comes together as a community at our “Gathering”.  Students from all grades showcase what they learned during the week. Our Gathering invites students to learn about each other’s talents, upcoming curriculum, presentation skills, and oral communication
