Kindergarten is an exciting time to get to know others!

In Kindergarten we use Morning Meeting to learn about each other and to learn to use the tools we need to get along. (C.A.R.E.S. : Cooperation, Assertion, Responsibility, Empathy, Self Control)


In Kindergarten, our literacy program is focused on phonemic awareness and phonics instruction; guided, shared and independent reading; and modeled, interactive, and independent writing.  Our goal is to have all our students become confident readers and writers using books that meet the reader at his/her instructional level.

The majority of our day is focused on literacy using Readers and Writers Workshop. There is time each day for Read Alouds (when the teacher reads to the students), Shared Reading (when the teacher and students read together), Guided Reading (when students read with support from the teacher) and Independent Reading (when students read by themselves). Kindergarten students also learn about how words work by learning to make words (changing red to bed by changing the beginning sound), learning word patterns (cat, hat, fat, sat), using what they know about letter sounds to sound out new words, and by learning that some words just need to be memorized (the, here, said, you).

During our daily Writers Workshop time, students use what they are learning about words to communicate their own ideas in print. Students will learn to write for a variety of reasons: stories, poems, factual information/report, and lists, to name a few.

We are using the Everyday Math curriculum. It's a hands-on program that focuses on number sense, patterns, shapes, measurement, estimation, and problem solving.
