What is Music Therapy?

  • Music therapy is a highly specialized music-based intervention facilitated by a board-certified music therapist. Music therapists help people use their relationship with music to promote health and growth in many areas of life.

Music therapy at LMAP serves as a specialist class for students in federal setting 3 DCD classrooms.  It includes interventions that focus on specific goal areas, and achieves them using music creation, music listening, instrument play, dancing, and singing. In order to prepare for the school year, Ms. Stephanie completes a review of each student's Individualized Education Plan (IEP), a group assessment, and a treatment plan based upon what the group needs to work on most.

Common "I can" statements in music therapy are:

    I can listen and think

    I can look and think

    I can calm my body

I can play instruments with my classmates

I can sing with my classmates

    I can show kindness

    I can show independence
