Stephanie Bowron: Music Enrichment, Staff Accompanist, and Artist-in-Residence

Music fun for everyone
  • Ms. Bowron is a licensed English Language Arts teacher, but her favorite thing to teach is music. She is in her seventh year as a classroom music enrichment teacher and staff accompanist at Randolph Heights Elementary, and she serves as Artist-in-Residence at Horace Mann Elementary.

Her overarching goal is to help students enjoy and understand music by making it themselves, moving to it, learning about it, and sharing it. Classroom music should be a positive experience for students: it can require hard work and focus, but a sense of play and delight is the underpinning.

In practice, that means students in Ms. Bowron's class learn to play simple instruments, explore different ways of moving to music, discuss a wide variety of composers and musical traditions, expand their music taste and vocabulary, and sing all kinds of fun songs. Perhaps most importantly, students are encouraged to consider how music makes them feel, and to use music for good in their own lives as a source of connection and personal well-being.

Ms. Bowron's own three children attended St Paul Public Schools, and she is honored to be part of such caring, professional school communities. Outside of schools, you can often find her playing piano in other interesting places. She is also a student herself: three years ago she started attending a weekly tap dance class with some teacher friends (practice makes progress...).

If you see her out and about in St. Paul, you're welcome to say hello anytime!
