Ms. Kirstin Jarvis

Hello! My name is Ms. Jarvis, and I am a reading support teacher for students in grades 3, 4, and 5. This is my third year in SPPS in this role. This year, I've joined the SIPPS team, which means I'll be teaching reading support lessons using materials from the SIPPS curriculum.

Before teaching reading, I was a piano teacher! I had my own music teaching business. I fell in love with teaching children, and after a lot of thought, I decided to close my business and get my teaching license. It's the best decision I've ever made. I love teaching reading, I love American Indian Magnet School, I love my coworkers, and I love our students! I care about my students very deeply, and it is important to me to see the amazing things in every single one of them. And it is also important to me to help them see the amazing things in themselves!

What do I teach? I teach how to hear sounds in words, which is a very important skill for reading. Think of the word "cat": it has three sounds. C, A, T. Think of the word "school" - it has four sounds: s/k/oo/l. Students who struggle to hear the sounds in words, often struggle to read. An even bigger part of what I teach is phonics and sight words. For instance, one phonics skill is learning the sound that sh makes, and how to use it to read and spell words like "ship" or "cash."

Besides teaching, I also love gardening (mainly, flowers), and being outdoors. I live near Stillwater with my husband and two dogs.

Please, feel free to reach out to me anytime!
