Student Library Advisory Board (SLAB)

  •

During the 2019-20 school year, thanks to an Ecolab grant, the HPMS library was able to fund a student library advisory board--lovingly referred to as the SLAB.  We have been awarded a grant again this year and will work to continue to use this opportunity to bring student voice and choice into our library and its programming.  Some of the opportunities available to student leaders on the board include:

    • Working together with other students to determine how to improve the library to better meet student needs

    • Deciding which books or other resources we should bring into our library using this year’s grant funds

    • Planning and hosting activities and events for students, staff, and other members of our community

    • Helping make the library space comfortable and inviting for everyone who comes in

Initially, the group met twice monthly during lunch, with lunch being provided through the grant.  During distance learning, the group continued to meet virtually, weekly, and focused on creating literacy-based opportunities, such as book clubs and reading competitions, for students to participate in from a distance.  This year, we are meeting weekly during Foundations to continue to work to create learning and social opportunities for our community, both in-person and virtually, as needed. Each year, we invite a few interested 6th graders (and students in other grades, as space allows) to join us on this journey.  Interested students should see Ms. Andrews in the library for more information about the application process.
