International Baccalaureate: Middle Years Programme (MYP)

  • The IB Middle Years Programme (MYP)

Harding High School is an IB World school which includes the Middle Years Programme. We have been working hard to implement the programme’s flexible, inquiry-based, concept-driven approach to teaching and learning.

MYP at Harding is designed for students in grades 9 and 10.  It provides a framework of learning, which encourages students to become creative, critical and reflective thinkers.

The MYP encourages students to make connections between their studies in traditional subjects and the real world.  The traditional subjects include:

    • Language and literature (English)
    • Math
    • Science
    • Language Acquisition (French, Japanese, Hmong, Ojibwa Lakota, Dakota, and Spanish)
    • Individuals and Societies (World History and Geography)
    • Physical and Health Education
    • Design (FACS, automotive, digital design, etc.)
    • Art (visual and performing)

    How is MYP unique?

    • Personal Project
      • MYP projects are student-centred and age-appropriate, and they enable students to engage in practical explorations of a topic of interest to the student.
      • We encourage international-mindedness in IB students, starting with foundation in their own language and culture and pursued through the Personal Project.
      • We support students and their development as life long learners through this project.
    • Service
      • Students take action when they apply what they are learning in the classroom and beyond. IB learners strive to be caring members of the community who demonstrate a commitment to service—making a positive difference to the lives of others and to the environment.

    • Conceptual Based Learning
      • We encourage a positive attitude to learning by challenging students to solve problems, show creativity and resourcefulness, and participate actively in their communities.
      • We reflect student lives by providing a framework that allows students to see the connections among the subjects themselves, and between the subjects and authentic issues.
      • We support the development of communication skills to encourage inquiry, understanding, language acquisition, and to allow student reflection and expression.
      • Through the learner profile, we emphasize the development of the whole student—physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically.

  • The Learner Profile

The aim of all IB programmes is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world.
