Second Grade

Counting money
  • Welcome to 2nd grade. We currently have two sections of 2nd graders here at Hamline Elementary. We follow the Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop model which offers daily practice in reading and writing and allows children to work independently at their individual levels.

Math focuses on number sense, addition and subtraction strategies, problem solving, money, time, measurement, place value, fractions and beginning multiplication.  We use small flexible groups, hands-on manipulatives and technology including iPads to help meet the needs of all students.

Reader's Workshop consists of a daily shared mini lesson followed by guided reading groups, independent reading and phonics skills. Students will participate in weekly book clubs to further expand their ability to have rich conversations about literature. Students will use Reading A-Z  to increase fluency and comprehension while on the computer.

Writer's Workshop Throughout the year students will publish a small moment story, product/place review, nonfiction research, book recommendations, realistic fiction and poetry. We use art and technology to enhance our publishing.

Responsive Classroom is used to build community in our school day. We have a daily morning meeting to start each day together with a greeting, sharing and cooperative activities. This is a great way to talk about what is going well and what we can improve on in our classroom.

Homework.  We are encouraging you to read various types of reading materials and build learning experiences at home.  Reading does not need to be in English.  If your family speaks and reads in multiple languages, this will enhance your child's love for reading.    They can apply everything they are learning at school at home though cooking, cleaning, board games, and simply having conversations with family and friends.  You are your child's first teacher. We are here to continue guiding you and your child to more ideas.  Refer to the weekly newsletter for ways you can help your child learn.  We will also include community events that also foster your child's learning.

Field Trips are still unknown for this year.

Our Hamline University Partnership  We work with Hamline University students daily in our rooms and we learn financial literacy with the student group Money Revolution.
