2nd Grade

  •  2nd Grade 1

We encourage students to continue to work on their reading, writing, and math skills over the summer so they are primed for 3rd grade. We’ve been asked to list some ideas and resources below for families to use this summer so, as one parent said, “their brains don’t turn to mush.”

Math: The students should have mastery and automaticity of all their addition and subtraction facts and of many of their multiplication and division facts. Students have been using Xtramath.org on their iPads and each has an account. Before they can move on to subtraction, they have to show mastery of addition facts. This is a great way to practice their math facts and it shows their progress as well. Students should also use analog clocks whenever possible and should help estimate costs and change when shopping with their families. The students also know quite a few math games that you can play at home. Resources for those games can be found in the parent newsletters for math on our website or at https://emgames.everydaymathonline.com/demosite/demo_chooser_ec.html

Writing: Keeping a journal of things they’ve done over the summer is a great springboard for writing a memoir in 3rd grade. Students may also want to do some research and write about things they are learning during the summer. This is also a great time to write about anything. Students love writing fiction and fantasy and summer is a great time to do that kind of writing. It’s also fun to write and perform plays for family members.

Reading: Ms. Vogel, our librarian, posted a great article in the last Headliner and it’s worth sharing – just turn this paper over. Just read, read, read, read and read some more. Read with your children and have them read on their own, but please talk to them about what they are reading. This increases comprehension so much!

Enjoy your summer with your children! We look forward to their visits in the fall.
