Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports Behavioral Model

  • At Battle Creek Elementary, we expect that everyone will conduct themselves with courtesy and respect. Every student and employee at Battle Creek is entitled to learn and work in a safe school environment. To ensure this, the school has established a clear student discipline policy, consequences appropriate with the behavior, and practices to consistently apply the policy.

Battle Creek Elementary’s Belief of Behavioral Discipline

At Battle Creek Elementary behavior is viewed as an academic subject. Much like reading and math, behavior needs to be taught. Through the explicit teaching of Battle Creek’s behavioral expectations students are taught how to be respectful, responsible, and safe in all school settings.

With defined expectations BCE staff are able to positively recognize and reinforce desired behaviors. Which ultimately creates an environment that maximizes instructional learning time and fosters a safe and welcoming school environment.

Battle Creek has adopted a proactive approach to creating a positive learning climate called PBIS. PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions & Support) is a school-wide systems of support that include proactive strategies for defining, teaching, and supporting appropriate student behaviors to create positive school environments.

A continuum of positive behavior support for all students within a school is implemented in areas including the classroom and non-classroom settings. Attention is focused on creating and sustaining systems of support that improve lifestyle results for all children by making problem behavior less effective, efficient, and relevant, and desired behavior more functional.
