Our Fifth Grade

fifth grade
  • Fifth grade is a wonderful time in the life of your child. They will learn new things, make new friends and prove to themselves that they can handle more responsibility. An ELL teacher, academic specialists, and a LD teacher team with classroom teachers to provide instruction in reading, math, and writing.

Our job as fifth grade teachers is to ensure that our students succeed with the curriculum, as well as believe that they can be successful in whatever they do. Fifth grade uses “Everyday Mathematics,” which is a thinking and problem solving approach to mathematics.

It corresponds to the math standards and prepares students for the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCA) tests that are taken in April. We strive to balance the rigor of the academics with many educational experiences. Our Environmental Expert Topic in Science is Erosion. We learn about landforms, what shapes the Earth’s surface, and how we can lessen the impact of erosion locally.

Field trips are centered around the enrichment of Science. They include trips to the Valley Branch Nature Center to learn about the environment, the Como Planetarium to study the moon, and Physics Force to learn about science experiments.
