Reading and Writing

  • Reading and Writing at Battle Creek Middle School values high standards, academic rigor and quality communication for all studentsin the classroom. In every Reading and Writing class, we offer opportunities for students to demonstrate proficiency in the following areas:

    • Reading
    • Comprehesion
    • Literature
    • Speaking and Listening
    • Writing
    • Vocabulary Exploration

All Reading and Writing classes participate in the Panther Pride program with high expectations for students to be punctual, prepared and polite (and meanwhile, we really enjoy the alliteration!) In Reading and Writing classes, students participate in lively discussions. Respectful discussion skills are modeled, practiced and expected.

The reading department is a part of the English department, offering support to those students who may need additional reading skills. We provide instruction in understanding and recalling text which includes developing skills in word recognition, vocabulary, comprehension, and literature.

Work is done in fiction and nonfiction, although in reading classes nonfiction is emphasized to align with standardized testing. Students develop confidence in their reading. Reading instruction provides strategies that can be transferred to all subject areas.
