  • The foundations of music can be broken down into areas of focus.

    Kindergarten will focus on steady beat, singing and playing (Minnesota Standards 0.1.1.3.1 and 0.1.2.3.2). We will also focus on music circle dances and improvisation (Minn. Standard 0.2.1.3.1)

    1st Grade will review steady beat, and refine singing to So and Mi (standard 0.1.2.3.2)  and include songs of different languages (Minn. Standard 0.1.3.3.1)

    2nd Grade will keep a steady beat with an instrument (the foundation of creating an ostinato) to accompany singing (Minn. Standard 0.3.1.3.1). They review circle music games and add partners in circle games

    3rd grade will be introduced to standard music notation (Minn. Standard 0.1.2.3.1) as well as folk dances from around the world (Minn standard 0.1.3.3.1). They also start playing the recorder to introduce them to band instruments.

    4th grade review the basic elements of music including form, syn co pa and 16th note rhythms, and harmony (Minn. Standard 4.1.1.3.1 and 4.1.2.3.1). Singing the full scale in a major key and pentatonic La base. Students can compose on computer or iPads, or traditionally using paper. Students begin to learn the basics of Ukulele. Minn. Standard 4.2.1.3.1).

    5th grade review basic elements of music and learn drum circle rhythms included dotted 16th notes and syncopation (Minn Standard 4.1.3.3.1 and 4.1.3.3.1). They are also learning 2 part singing in the form of rounds, harmony, ostinato, layering through rote and notation. Students continue to build their Ukulele skills. 

    All students will perform a spring choral concert for the community (Minn. Standard 4.3.1.3.1). All students will also attend a musical concert at the Ordway in the spring, which is usually enjoyed by all. They have the opportunity to reflect their own personal interpretations and reactions to the show they say (Minn. standard 4.4.1.3.1)
