English Language Learners

  • Students who speak languages other than English learn English skills in English Language Learner (ELL) classes.

Students work on improving their Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening skills.

Como offers ELL classes at levels 1, 1.5, and 2 in our Langauge Academy, and also 3 and 4 as students move into mainstream classes.

ELL students in levels 1, 1.5, and 2 may spend much of their day in sheltered ELL classes, while level 3 and 4 students are more mainstreamed into classes and have fewer and fewer hours of ELL instruction a day as their English skills increase.

Students are placed in ELL classes based on several possible factors: English ACCESS/WIDA test scores, course grades, age, and educational background.

Some ELL students graduate in 4 years of high school, others in 5, and others in 6. This depends on the student's individual graduation pathway.
