Learning Disabilities (LD)

  • Children who are diagnosed with a learning disability may have difficulty reading, writing, spelling, reasoning, recalling or organizing information or doing math. Learning disabilities are diagnosed by a team of Special Education professionals who are trained to recognize the underlying causes of children's academic challenges. Children with learning disabilities show a significant discrepancy between ability and achievement. The Special Education staff at Benjamin E. Mays provide small group instruction for these students which is explicit, sequential and well matched to each student's emerging skills. Students are also given the opportunity to practice learning strategies in a strongly supportive environment with ongoing feedback from their teacher. Our expectation is that children with learning disabilities will learn effective ways to be successful in school and go on to pursue satisfying careers in their adult lives.
