Automatic Email Forwarding

Automatic Email Forwarding to External Addresses

Due to a recent security settings update by Microsoft, our email system will no longer send mail to SPPS inboxes that are automatically forwarding all messages to external (non-’@spps.org’) email addresses.

This protects our senders from having their mail sent to organizations they weren’t expecting it to and prevents confidential student information from being accidentally sent to organizations that don’t have a right to it.  It also serves to protect our users from the more common forms of data theft when accounts get compromised.

When sending an email to a user that is forwarding all mail to a non-’@spps.org’ email, you’ll receive a bounce-back that will contain the following message:

Error: 550 5.7.520 Access denied, Your organization does not allow external forwarding. Please contact your administrator for further assistance. AS(7555)

To fix this, the person you were trying to send email to needs to disable automatic forwarding, or at least change it to forward within @spps.org.

Forwarding can be disabled in O365 by going to the settings cog in the upper right of a browser window.  From there, ‘View All Outlook Settings’ -> Mail -> Forwarding will bring a user to the menu where this can be disabled or updated.

Note - this does apply to and impact staff who have chosen to forward their @spps.org address to their @stpaul.k12.mn.us one.  It does not impact those who are forwarding @stpaul.k12.mn.us address to their @spps.org inbox.
