Freedom School Express (FSX) program provides free, comprehensive, culturally relevant summer and afterschool enrichment to children in high-poverty areas. The program helps children fall in love with reading, increases their self-esteem, generates more positive attitudes toward learning, and connects their families with needed resources in the community. This program is proven to curb summer learning loss and help close the opportunity gap.

FSX is held immediately afterschool for two hours, two days a week (days vary by site), and scholars are offered a snack/light meal. Afterschool programs begin in October.  Locations include Benjamin E. Mays (2:00-3:45 pm), Capitol Hill (4:15 - 6:00 pm), and Hazel Park (4:00-5:45 pm).

Bus transportation is available for Freedom School Express scholars at the Capitol Hill and Hazel Park locations through a partnership with the SPPS Flipside Program and the SPPS Department of Alternative Education.

Transportation is not currently available for scholars at the Benjamin E. Mays location - each family must arrange their own transportation. Freedom School Express Site Leaders and/or Clerks can assist families with exploring transportation options provided through SPPS DAE and Metro Transit Passes and/or Tokens. A parent/guardian must arrive at school at the end of each FSX session to accompany their student(s) home. Students will not be allowed to leave the building to take Metro Transit without a parent/guardian.

Registration for FSX is through the SPPS Office of Alternative Education's Extended Day for Learning (EDL) Program.
