• Writing 1

    Writing 1 is an intermediate writing class designed for those learners whose native language is not English.  In this class, students will improve their spelling of high-frequency words while practicing writing complete sentences with proper use of basic punctuation (e.g. periods, question marks, exclamation points, commas, and apostrophes).  Daily lessons will include practice using the simple present, the present continuous, the simple past, and the simple future verb tenses in both positive and negative forms.  Classroom activities will include taking dictation, answering written questions, composing complete sentences in response to a written or picture prompt, and editing practice.  Students’ digital literacy skills will be promoted through regular keyboarding and word-processing practice.  Each month students will take an end-of-month assessment which will be scored according to the Writing 1 Skills Check List.  

     

    Prerequisites:      

    • Enrollment in or completion of ELL 4
    • Pre-test on the TABE E Language Test

     

    Promotion Requirements:

    • 4.0 on the TABE E Language Test
    • Demonstrated ability to compose sentences in four verb tenses with very few errors in agreement, word choice, spelling, vocabulary, and punctuation.

    Writing 2

     

    Writing 2 is a high-intermediate writing course.  In this class, students will practice writing a simple paragraph that includes a concise topic sentence, 3 main points, 1-3 supporting details, and a concluding statement.  Daily lessons will include practice using the simple present, the present continuous, the simple past, the past continuous, the present perfect, and the simple future verb tenses.  In class, students will also practice using correct spelling of high-frequency words and appropriate punctuation (e.g., end marks, commas, apostrophes, and capital letters).  Classroom activities will include taking dictation, answering written questions, composing complete sentences in response to a written or picture prompt, and editing practice.  Students’ digital literacy skills will be promoted through regular keyboarding and word-processing practice.  Each month students will take an end-of-month assessment which will be scored according to the Writing 2 Skills Check List.
