Volunteer Opportunities

ABE Tutors (Adult Basic Education)
Tutor adults in basic Reading, Writing, Math, or GED skills in a one-on-one or small group setting on site. Tutors are responsible for their own lesson plans. However, most of the time homework help is needed and learners bring materials from their classes that you can work through together. Textbooks and resources are available for tutoring use on site.

ELL Tutors (English Language Learning)
Tutor English language skills to refugees and immigrants in a learning lab (homework help) or one-on-one setting. Tutors are responsible for their own lesson plans. However, most of the time homework help is needed and learners bring materials from class that you can work through together. Textbooks and resources are available for tutoring use on site.

Classroom Volunteers
Assist Adult Basic Education instructors in the classroom or computer lab. Subjects and classrooms vary including Math, English, Writing, ELL, basic skills, computer, citizenship, GED etc. Includes individualized, small group, and large group instruction.

Digital Education Lab Support Volunteers
Assist students in computer-based learning. Skill sets include: using a mouse, keyboarding, e-mail, windows and tabs, internet browsing, and Microsoft Office. Plus a lot of patience!

Non-Tutoring Volunteer Opportunities
Additional non-tutoring opportunities are also available. Some examples include:
- Write articles for the student newsletter
- Help with the website
- Clerical work
- Intake/Assessment
- Organize a fundraiser or ABE legistlative initiative
- Special projects as needed

Flexible Times- Daytime and evening opportunities 8:30am-8:00pm
- Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays available (limited Fridays)

Commitment Required
1-3 hours per week for at least 6 months (or a semester if in school)
Qualifications:
- Dependable and prompt
- Interested in others
- Able to relate to learners with a wide range of abilities
- Respectful of confidentiality
- Literate in English
- Flexible, friendly, patient, and optimistic.
Especially good for the following (but open to anyone with the above qualifications):
- TESOL majors
- English majors
- Math majors
- People interested in other cultures
- People interested in teaching
Volunteer Application & Onboarding Process
- Fill out the online Volunteer Application form
- Fill out the Background Check form and bring it to your orientation
- Complete a Volunteer Orientation at the Hubbs Center
- Complete Literacy Minnesota's 4-hour Foundations Training (2 two-hour sessions)
