New Math Curriculum Implementation

As you are aware, the district is adopting a new K-12 math curriculum starting in the 2023-24 school year. The Board of Education approved a 10-year, $10 million curriculum purchase of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s Into Math for grades K-5 and Savvas Learning Company’s enVision for grades 6-12. These curricula were selected in collaboration with SPPS teachers at all grade levels. More information is available in this Board presentation.

At the high school level, this curriculum adoption presents the opportunity for the district to move to an integrated math model. This is an adjustment to the scope and sequence of traditional math content. Integrated math is more culturally responsive, better aligned with state standards, and better prepares students for real-life application of mathematics compared to the traditional model. We will be taking a phased approach to implementation, starting with 9th grade (and accelerated 8th grade) students taking Integrated I in place of Intermediate Algebra starting in fall 2023-24.

High school math teachers will have ample professional development opportunities between April-September. Families of incoming high school students will receive more information about integrated math and what to expect this fall starting in May.
