May is Mental Health Awareness Month

Dear colleagues,

As we inch closer to the end of the school year, it’s a busy time for everyone with final projects and grading, planning events and celebrations, and tying up as much work as we can before summer break. It can be a hectic and stressful time, which makes it even more important to recognize that May is Mental Health Awareness Month.

At SPPS, we accept and believe that both adults and young people who experience mental health conditions can and do live healthy, fulfilling lives. Many of you have gotten or will soon receive green ribbons from the Office of School Support. This Green Ribbon is the internationally recognized symbol for Mental Health Awareness. Across the district, staff are encouraged to wear this ribbon on May 24 to show support for mental health and wellness and to end the stigma surrounding mental health care.

As I’ve been meeting with students over the past couple months, mental health continues to be top of mind for them and, in turn, for me. I am proud that our district has so many resources available through our school-based mental health teams and community partners, and that we are using ARP funds to create calming spaces for both students and staff across the district. At the same time, the need for mental health support is greater than ever, and it is contingent upon all of us to meet those needs as best we can.

The Office of School Support has been sharing resources for staff and students throughout this month, including a choice board that includes the opportunity to win prizes. For those who need additional support, the below services are also available for anyone in the community to access 24/7:

Thank you for your commitment to your own, your students’ and your colleagues’ mental health, this month and every month. I look forward to seeing everyone’s green ribbons on Wednesday.
