June 6 Heat Advisory Message

Published June 6, 2021

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for the Twin Cities through 6 p.m. Tuesday, and high temperatures in the 90s are expected later into the week. We know you are using your best judgment in dealing with hot weather this early in the season.

Heat Guidelines

This evening, families will receive a phone call about the hot weather. The message will remind them to dress their children in lightweight clothing. If you have heat-related issues in your building, school leaders should contact Facilities at 651-744-1800.

  • Review the SPPS heat guidelines, available at spps.org/Page/36719
  • Schools that do not have air conditioning should add available fans to hallways and classrooms as appropriate
  • In some cases, it may be more comfortable outdoors for certain instruction
  • Please allow students to take frequent breaks to drinking fountains and hydration stations
  • If classrooms are too warm, please be flexible and move to cooler parts of the building

Recess

Schools should use their best judgment in determining whether recess should be held outside.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
