SPPS Face Covering Update - June 3, 2021

Updated June 3, 2021

On May 6, Gov. Walz issued new updates to the state’s COVID-19 health and safety guidelines. In general, these updates do not apply to school districts in Minnesota. SPPS and all other school districts are still following the Minnesota Department of Education’s Safe Learning Plan for the remainder of the 2020-21 school year.

Following the Governor's removal of the statewide mask mandate and Mayor Carter's lifting of the City of Saint Paul mandate, face coverings are still required for all students and staff who are medically able to wear them in school buildings and on buses through the end of the school year. Staff and visitors in non-school buildings are also required to wear face coverings indoors until the end of the school year. Starting June 14, face coverings will be recommended but not required for students, staff and visitors.

Exceptions to face covering guidelines

Following the latest guidance about outdoor settings, face masks are not required at recess or other outdoor activities during the school day.

Following the Minnesota State High School League’s updated guidance, face coverings are not required for student athletes, coaches or spectators during outdoor practices or competitions. For more information, visit spps.org/sports.
