Dear Colleagues,

We are days away from the beginning of the 2022-23 school year. Whether you are new to your school, new to the district or a longtime employee, I am so happy you are here. If you were part of new educators week last week, I hope you are starting this new chapter feeling energized and ready for what is sure to be an inspiring, challenging and incredible year. For those who have been working this summer or are returning after summer break, welcome back and thank you for your continued dedication to SPPS.

At Saint Paul Public Schools, our mission is to inspire students to think critically, pursue their dreams and change the world. Entering my sixth year as Superintendent, I feel a great sense of pride and also a great responsibility to support all of you and our students in achieving the outcomes we have laid out in our SPPS Achieves strategic plan

As staff, we are all here to provide challenging and engaging educational experiences in a welcoming environment that reflects the diverse backgrounds of our community. It is up to all of us to make sure that every student feels seen, proud of who they are, and ready to find joy in learning.

If you work in our schools, I hope you are now well versed in culturally responsive instruction, and feel supported in bringing that framework into the classroom. Students need to see themselves in their learning, or they will not learn. This is an important way that we can begin to remove barriers and interrupt practices that disproportionately impact many of our students.

We must also believe the undeniable truth that every child wants to learn and be successful. Every student is capable, wants to do the right thing, and needs us to guide and provide them opportunities to grow and learn from their mistakes. When we believe in our young people and support their dreams, they can and they will accomplish amazing things.

Whether you work directly with students or serve another role in the district, you are an important part of the Saint Paul Public Schools community. Together, I know we can make this school year the best one yet while being ready to adapt to whatever challenges come our way. Thank you for your dedication and commitment to SPPS and our students. Have a great opening week and I look forward to working alongside you this school year.

In Partnership,
