Calendar Change Survey Results

Last month, Saint Paul Public Schools sent a survey to all families and staff in the district to get their opinion on a potential change to the school calendar. The survey asked for opinions on adding up to 5 digital learning days to the school calendar between February-June 2022.

In total, the survey received 8,665 responses. Overall, 67% of respondents agreed with the changes, and 33% didn’t agree with the changes. Instructional staff were more likely to agree, and families were more likely to disagree. The biggest concern among both groups was that students will lose instructional time, along with a concern about preparing for digital learning days for staff.

The survey also allowed respondents to provide open-ended feedback. These comments presented many concerns from both families and staff. Both groups expressed that digital learning days are difficult and cause disruption. Other challenges include communication between schools, students and families; access to technology at home; family and work schedules; and specific learning needs that can only be met in person. Many respondents expressed not understanding the reason for adding five “random” days to the calendar.

Based on this feedback, SPPS will not be adding any digital learning days to the school calendar at this time. Please note that this survey was separate from the temporary shifts to virtual learning implemented last month in response to staffing levels at individual schools.
