  • Physical Education:

    Creative Arts Physical Education always includes the National Standards to promote a physically literate individual.  Activities are both Cooperative and Competitive. Students work individually, with partners and in groups to achieve goals mentally and physically.  The personal fitness component includes attention to muscular strength and endurance, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, speed, power, goal setting and fitness planning. The personal fitness component includes attention to muscular strength and endurance, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, speed, power, goal setting and fitness planning. The wellness component examines the role of nutrition, activity/rest and your own lifestyle patterns to reflect on and modify when needed.

    Students will be incorporating the arts with their physical education in the following ways:

    1. Poems/Reflection about Sports
    2. Visual depictions of Athletes in Motion
    3. Creating presentations with steps to a goal (i.e. How to Shoot a Free Throw in Basketball;How to Bump and Set a Volleyball)
    4. Spoken Word about PE class or particular sport

    Health:

    Health Education curriculum is in place to meet the National Health Education and Saint Paul Public School Power Standards for all SPPS middle school students. Health Education is crucial to enhance the overall health and well-being of individuals and their respective communities.  Health will provide students with knowledge, attitudes, and skills to make healthy decisions for life-long health and wellness.  The units students learn include: Personal Wellness, Mental Health, Tobacco, Alcohol, and Other Drugs, Human Relationships & Reproduction, Fitness & Nutrition, and Body Systems & Disease.

    Individual and Community Health Education is curriculum in place to meet the National Health Education Standards and District Power Standards for Saint Paul Public School students.  The objective of Individual and Community Health Education is to give students the opportunity to learn health behaviors and concepts related to health science to enhance the overall health and well being of individuals and our respective communities.  Listed below are the 8 National Health Education Standards and SPPS Health Education Power Standards, which will be the focus of this course.  The course will provide students with knowledge, attitudes, and skills to make healthy decisions for life-long health and wellness.  Our goal is to explore how an individual choice can impact our community and society as a whole.

    Personal Wellness: 

    • Identify and explain personal health skill knowledge in order to make informed decisions.

    • Understand and apply good character strategies.

    • Understand and Demonstrate CPR compressions.

    Mental Health: 

    • Identify and categorize signs and symptoms of mental health issues and investigate management techniques including community resources.

    Fitness and Nutrition: 

    • Explain how exercise benefits social, mental, and physical health.
    • Interpret food labels and evaluate nutritional value of personal food choices.
    • Analyze the balance between energy input and energy output.

    Tobacco, Alcohol, and other Drugs: 

    • Compare and Contrast physical, social, and mental/Emotional short-term and long- term effects of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.

    • Explain the benefits of remaining drug, alcohol, and tobacco free.

    Body Systems and Disease:

    • Identify body system functions and demonstrate healthy decisions related to maintaining the health of each system.

    • Locate and investigate professional healthcare resources and information related to disease prevention.

    Human Relationships and Reproduction: 

    • Identify and explain the physical, mental/emotional, and social risks associated with sexual activity now and in the future.

    • Distinguish between safe and harmful relationship characteristics and behaviors.

    • Demonstrate ways to communicated care, considerations, respect of self and others.

    • Identify and Explain male and female reproduction system.
